demons tied and tying by richard bartle

About the work

Whilst I was on residency in 2018 there was an incident in Istanbul where a Saudi journalist was kidnapped and murdered in his own embassy. At the time I was just contemplating this work and the idea of demons tying each other up. I used the traditional Keffiyeh head dress pattern to create the bodies of these demons, the red and black symbolising the two branches of Islam: Sunni and Shia. This work is loaded with symbolism, it is also a reflection on my own sadness about how the middle east continues to tear itself apart.
