Unearthed
Artefacts from Sheffield Castle
Wessex Archaeology conservation studio
Between the River and the City is a developing body of work created in collaboration with Wessex Archaeology and informed by artefacts recovered from Sheffield Castle.
Working alongside archaeologists, archivists and conservation specialists, the project explores how contemporary art can engage with archaeological objects, archives and ideas of place. Through painting, sculpture, image transfer and material experimentation, the work investigates how physical evidence can reveal relationships between people, place and time.
The project develops through direct encounter with the finds. Handling, observing and discussing the objects allows their surfaces, histories and material qualities to guide the making process. Rather than illustrating the castle's history, the work uses archaeological evidence as the starting point for new relationships between past and present, observation and imagination.
The project is currently in development.
